A workshop on ‘Plagiarism’ was organized on February 9, 2008 in the Iqbal Auditorium, under the supervision of Ms. Maria Mashkoor, NEXUS Patron. The Workshop Convener was Mr. Salman Shehzad, who is with Hashoo Group/NIBAF as a Trainer. He is also an Assistant Professor at NIMS and the Student Ambassador of University of Westminster, UK.
The workshop began with the introduction of the word ‘Plagiarism’ being a Latin word, meaning ‘kidnapping’. The students were informed that basically when they are plagiarising, they are actually kidnapping the ideas, thoughts, words, images or even sounds of others. It is the practice of taking someone else’s idea or research without giving any credit to the respective person.
Within the academia, plagiarism by students or professors is considered to be an academic sin which is heavily penalized both by the universities and HEC. The development of Internet, besides giving so many advantages, has unfortunately also made it feasible to cut, copy and paste documents of others.
At the end of the seminar, the moral lesson; say no to plagiarism and when in doubt, give a citation, was driven home.
