Mohammad Ali Jinnah University Islamabad Campus and University of Engineering and Technology (UET) Taxila in collaboration with IEEE Islamabad section, organized IEEE 13th International Multitopic Conference (INMIC) – 2009

Mohammad Ali Jinnah University Islamabad Campus and University of Engineering and Technology (UET) Taxila in collaboration with IEEE Islamabad section, organized IEEE 13th International Multitopic Conference (INMIC) – 2009 on 14 – 15 December 2009. The conference was inaugurated by the renowned nuclear scientist Dr. Samar Mubarakmand.

In his inaugural speech he emphasized that an application oriented research and urged the young scientists, engineers and professionals to give due emphasis on the industrial research besides publications which would be having an impact on the economic growth of the country. He stated that Pakistan is gifted with enormous resources like coals and copper mines which are available in abundance in the Baluchistan province and are still un-exploited. He also told that the Planning Commission has devised a strategy to unearth extract the coals and the copper from these mines which would bring an industrial revolution.

The Conference Chair Dr. Muhammad Mansoor Ahmed said that the current INMIC 2009 was 13th of its series which has improved over the years in its standard and quality. This is evident from the fact that the call for papers attracted an overwhelming response and about 454 full papers were received. He thanked the distinguished panel of more than 110 international and local reviewers, for a very thorough and rigorous peer review, who cleared only about 100 papers for acceptance. The publications committee, therefore checked each paper for compliance to IEEE publication guidelines and very importantly, for plagiarism. After all this scrutiny, only 86 papers were finally published in the conference proceedings, which speaks itself a very good standard of the conference proceedings.

The conference was organized in 14 different technical sessions, in two parallel streams. The sessions addressed a wide range of topics including: Communication Systems, Image processing, Microelectronics, Signal Processing, Computer Networks, Control Systems, Software Engineering, Artificial Intelligence and Bio-informatics, etc. About 64 papers were presented in these sessions which show an excellent level of participation from the authors. I take this opportunity to thank all the distinguish authors for preparing excellent presentations to share their valuable contribution in their respective fields. Special thanks to session chairs for smoothly managing the sessions and for helping us to evaluate the paper presentations. The Organizing Committee is also grateful to the participants who attended the conference, and availed an opportunity for meeting fellow researchers, exchanging ideas, and learning about each other's work. More than 370 professionals and students attended the conference with a participation of about 250 attendees each day.

 

Time Management and Personality Development
Crescendo is constantly seeking venues to provide the students with academic awareness and training opportunities. In this reference the society organized two training workshop sessions on ‘Time Management’ and ‘Personality Development’ on concessional rates for the students at the university premises. They were two short but motivational and life-changing sessions for every individual with a considerable intellect or a drive to achieve one’s personal and professional excellence. These sessions were arranged in the supervision of Mrs. Ameena Zafar on Tuesday, 8 December, 2009 in Iqbal Auditorium from 02:30 pm to 05:30 pm. The guest speaker was Mr. Abid Iqbal Khari. Abdul Samad, Omar Malik, Farhan Cheema were the student facilitators for the sessions.

Ad & Film Competition
An Ad & Film Competition was organized by Crescendo on Tuesday, 15 December, 2009 in Iqbal Auditorium. The timing of the event was from 02:30pm to 05:30pm.  The event was supervised by Mrs. Ameena Zafar and organized by, Abdul Samad, Umer Khalil and Azka Junaid.

The chief guest and judge for this event was Mr. Mudassir Ahmed Khan, Managing Director of a production company (Muraz). He is also working as a producer in Express News. He has various Ad and Film competition awards to his credit and recently won the documentary competition arranged by Dawn News. In the Ad competition Nabil Toor, Mian Raheel, Bilawal and Saima Malik won the 1st, 2nd and 3rd prize respectively. Whereas in the Film Competition Usman Ali Shah, Nabil Toor and Sajid Zulfiqar won the 1st, 2nd and 3rd prize respectively. The winners were given cash prizes.

Mr. Mudassir was very impressed by the performance shown by the students and he also gave them some valuable tips and techniques to improve their skills. He also praised the efforts of the Crescendo for providing a platform for such creativity. He congratulated the students for making such a superior effort in limited resources. At the end of the event there was a photo session and then the university crest was presented to the chief guest. The function ended with a photo session  and refreshments.

 

Chancellor and Dean Honor Rolls
A ceremony was held to award the Chancellor and Dean Honor Rolls to the top scoring students of Faculty of Engineering and Applied Sciences of Mohammad Ali Jinnah University, Islamabad Campus on Monday, 23rd November 2009.

Senator Engr. Rukhsana Zuberi, Chairperson Pakistan Engineering Council, was the Chief Guest.  She distributed the Chancellor’s / Dean’s Honor Certificates and shields to 64 students (28 from Electronic Engineering, 21 from Bioinformatics and 15 from Computer Sciences, departments respectively). She also distributed the shields for Best Final Year Design Project (Fall 08 & Spring 09 semesters) to 11 students of Electronic Engineering.  

The Chairperson congratulated the students on their excellent academic achievements.  She expressed her appreciation for the efforts and contribution of the University in the area of Electronic Engineering, Computer Science and Bio-Informatics.

Dr. Muhammad Mansoor Ahmed, Executive Vice President thanked the Chairperson for gracing the occasion with her precious time for the encouragement of the students and presented her University Souvenir.
 

Seminar on Golden Principles of Success
On November 5, 2009, Mohammad Ali Jinnah University, Islamabad Campus organized a seminar on Golden Principles of Success Mr. Furrukh Shahzad Dall, Advocate of Federal High Court, and Federal Service Tribunal Islamabad as the guest speaker. Mr.Ahsan Mahmood, Lecturer supervised the seminar. 

He elaborated on the golden principles to achieve success that are goal setting, keeping motives behind every task, hard work and, positive thinking.

Mohammad Ali Jinnah University, Islamabad Campus, arranged a seminar on Awareness of Law on December 3, 2009. Mr. Farrukh Shahzad Dall, Advocate of Federal High Court, and Federal Service Tribunal Islamabad was the guest speaker.

Visit to Morocco
Dr. Nayyer Masood, Head of Department CS&BI at Mohammad Ali Jinnah University, Islamabad Campus visited Morocco to attend the SKIMA 09 conference and to attend the physical meeting of coordinators of eLINK project. SKIMA 09 was the third conference of its series. It was arranged in Sidi Mohamed Ben Abdellah University, Fez. Participants from more than 20 countries participated in the conference; among them they had very useful presentations and discussions during the conference. The second objective of the meeting was to attend the meeting of eLINK coordinators. eLINK is an EU funded project, linking 11 universities from Europe and Asia. Coordinators from 10 countries were present there. They discussed the current status of the project, decided future action plan and found the progress of the report satisfactory. Possibilities of future collaborations were also discussed during the meeting. Fez is an old city of Morocco, exhibiting modern trends and old traditions of the country. The old Fez city has been surrounded by a large wall and it is called ‘Madina’. They have transformed it into a tourist place, offering many attractions to the tourists, specially the local products. Many tourists from different parts of the world are found in Fez. Hotels from very cheap to five stars hotels are available there. It is a neat and clean city.
 

Mr. Naveed Ahmed, Founder & CEO Mustakbil.com studying in Mohammad Ali Jinnah University, wins the Asia Pacific Future 100 fellowship 2009
Ms. Andrea Krause, Executive Director, The Foundation for Youth Social Entrepreneurship says:

Mr.Naveed Ahmed did his Software Engineering from Foundation University and is currently enrolled in Mohammad Ali Jinnah University, Islamabad Campus where he is doing his MBA. He runs his IT service which specializes in IT enabled services including website design, development, domain registration, web hosting and online recruitment solutions – Mustakbil.com in Pakistan and the Middle East.

The annual “Asia Pacific Future 100” program is a platform to provide young and inspiring entrepreneurs from Asia as role models to youth to raise entrepreneurship awareness in Asia Pacific. 100 young entrepreneurs and Social Change makers under the age of 30 years are selected for a one year fellowship and their stories serve as inspiration to foster an entrepreneurial culture among our youth.
 

Seminar on Analysis of Financial Statement
A seminar was conducted on Analysis of Financial Statement by the students of Financial Management with the collaboration of Jinnah Finance Society. This knowledgeable session began with the recitation of Verses from the Holy Quran by Mr. Farhat Abbas in Auditorium 8, on November 12, 2009.
Mr. Asaad Rabani Company Secretary of Mari Gas Company Limited, discussed the main areas of financial statements which included liquidity ratios, gearing ratios, risk elements of an investment, dividend policies, returns etc.
This session was a great source of knowledge and provided a guideline for the finance major students as the speaker is an expert and has in depth information of the area.

The course instructor Associate Professor Mr. Abbas Ismial, concluded the session while giving a token of thanks and present to Mr.Asaad Rabani. 
 

SHRM hosts seminar on Allama Iqbal as a Leader
On September 8, 2009, students of Introduction to Management (Section 1) organized a seminar on ‘Allama Iqbal as a Leader’. It was a very inspirational seminar in which the guest speaker Mrs. Qurut-ul-ain Jalil, Assistant Professor Mohammad Ali Jinnah University, Islamabad Campus, emphasized on that truth is the best form of leadership.

She emphasized that man is the pillar of the universe and must take up his responsibilities by being truthful, courageous and straightforward. This was Allama Iqbal’s vision of leadership. He especially emphasized on the role of youth in leadership as they are the most important part of a nation.

This seminar was conducted under the supervision of Ms. Maria Mashkoor Lecturer and SHRM Patron.

 

Human Development Report Publication Seminar
The Human Development Report is UNDP’s flagship publication and it is an independent study intended to stimulate debate and discussion, and this year five universities including Mohammad Ali Jinnah University, Islamabad Campus were invited to this prestigious ceremony.

The event was held on the October 5, 2009. A delegate of 16 students (MS HRM) along with Lecturer Ahsan Mahmood Ahmed attended the launch of a report on Human Development by UNDP. The guest of honour for this occasion was the Federal Minister for overseas Pakistani Mr Farooq Sattar.  

A research report was produced by UNDP on the issue of mobilising Human Development in Pakistan and all over the world. The following issues were highlighted; over coming barriers on human mobility and development in Pakistan and internationally, improving life of immigrants by diversifying their distribution all over the world, research identified that more than 30% of the population is living in rural areas and wants to move to urban areas for employment, Pakistan is ranked on 141 out of 181 countries for  unemployment rate according to Human Development Index (HDI),Most of the Pakistani migrants move to England, Middle East and the Gulf countries for better living standards, the report also stated that migration can create development but is not a substitute for human mobility, families moving into developing countries increase the level of their children’s education and living standards, unequal distribution of wages is also a cause for mobilising humans, most movers gain financially while migrating to different countries, 2.2% of Pakistanis move abroad every year for better living standards,

The seminar was very informative for the MS-HRM students of M.A.J.U. The students learning curve increased by understanding the concept of human development which is also a part of their course. It helped them to understand the roles of different organisations in facilitating human mobility on national and international level. At the end of the seminar the students of Mohammad Ali Jinnah University participated in the question & answer session to overcome ambiguities.

The report highlighted the issue of mobilising human development at the national and International level. Mobility is a concept which can improve the economic situation of the country. It can increase employment and distribution of citizens in the country. Mobility is done for increasing life standard and better education system for children. The government of Pakistan must consider human mobility as on national level and make a strategy to implement this program. Infrastructure and support should be provided by the government to UNDP for the fulfilment of their project for mobilising human all over Pakistan and in the rest of the world as well.
 

Gaming Competition
Jinnah Software Society, Jspark, is one of the many societies in Mohammad Ali Jinnah University, Islamabad Campus. This society, Jspark, held a Gaming Competition on November 7, 2009 for the students of all faculties. The contest was aimed to provide the students with an opportunity to test their gaming skills and experience a competing environment where each participant has the ability to win!  The response to the gaming competition was tremendous.
There were 11 teams which participated in the gaming competition for MOHAA Game while in NFS Game 24 teams participated. Each MOHAA team had four members and each NFS team had just 1 member. This competition started at about 11:30 am in the Project lab (NFS) and Enterprise DB lab (MOHAA). Muhammad Zaighum (NFS) and Wasif Kamal (MOHAA) supervised the competition.

Winner of NFS Game was Muhammad Naveed Akram (EE093020). The The students enjoyed this competition and were looking forward for the next one. Special thanks to Adeel Ahmed and Muhammad Raheel for their cooperation in handling the game competitions.
 

Aazadi T-20 cricket match organized by M.A.J.U. students
Students of Mohammad Ali Jinnah University, Islamabad Campus, organized an Aazadi T-20 cricket match on August 14, 2009. This match was a collaboration between Milestones Pvt. Ltd and Toyota Capital Motors. One team was from PHCAP I-e Physically Handicapped Cricket Association of Pakistan, versus the TV/Media icons of Pakistan.
 Mr.Faisal Karim Kundi, Deputy Speaker, National Assembly, Pakistan, was the chief guest. The TV/Media icons of Pakistan at Azadi T-20 were: Syed Anwar-ul-Hassan(Pakistan Television), Mazhar Abbas (ARY), Tahir Iqbal (Channel Tech), Haider Bilgrami (Samaa Television), Mehboob Alam (Pakistan Observer), Tariq Chaudhry (President, Islamabad Press Club & Director Aaj News), Munawar Mughal (Renowned Businessman/Islamabad Chambers), Masud Khawaja (A-Television, Khawaja Online), Javed Chaudhry (Express News/Zero Point).

This match took place on the 62nd Independence Day of Pakistan. The crowd was in a festive mood and cheered both the teams. Media 11 won the toss and elected to bat. They scored 154 runs in 20 overs for the loss of 8 wickets. Handicapped 11 scored 137 runs and lost all their wickets in 18 overs. Mohammad Aqeel of Handicapped 11 took 4 wickets and scored 47 runs was declared the Man of the Match. Media 11 won the match.

A closing ceremony befitting the day was addressed by Mr. Faisal Karim Kundi, Deputy Speaker, National Assembly, Pakistan & Mr. Abbas Hashmi, Chairman, PHCAP.

The students, who helped to organize this momentous cricket match under the supervision of Mr.Arif Khattak Lecturer, were praised by all.

 

M.A.J.U. says,” Salaam Teachers”
Mohammad Ali Jinnah University, Islamabad Campus, during the summer break encourages students to enroll for Summer Projects. This year, a group of students under the supervision of Mr.Khurram Shehzad, organized a seminar under the banner “Salaam Teachers” to pay tribute to all the teachers.

At least 100 teachers from government and private colleges attended the seminar which began late in the afternoon with the recitation from the Holy Quran. A lively discussion was held on ‘Do we have standard education in Pakistan?’ Mr. Amir Rizwan Principal of Islamabad College of Management and Commerce shared his thoughts with the audience.

“Salaam Teacher” was a befitting tribute to all the teachers who take pains to guide the youth and share their knowledge with them. Mr.Ansir Ali Rajput, Head of Department Management Sciences and Mr.Khurram Shehzad were the guest speakers. The chief guest was Mr.Fayyaz -Ur-Rahman Associate Professor at this University. Mr.Ansir Ali Rajput expressed the desire to start a Salaam Teachers’ club to help pay tribute to the wonderful work done by all teachers, and as a platform for teachers to express their feelings. Certificates of appreciation were awarded to all the teachers who participated in the seminar.
 

President RCCI lauds M.A.J.U. Entrepreneurs
In August 2009, MBA and BBA students arranged a seminar “A tribute to M.A.J.U Entrepreneurs’’ supervised by Miss Sidra Paracha, Lecturer at Mohammad Ali Jinnah University, Islamabad Campus.

 Mr. Syed Asad Mashadi, President Rawalpindi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (RCCI), was the guest speaker. He appreciated the effort of the entrepreneurs and for the University highlighting their effort. The entrepreneurs lamented how ‘load shedding’ was affecting their business. The President RCCI assured them that the problem would be solved soon.

Mr. Ansir  Ali Rajput, Head of Department Management Sciences, also appreciated their effort at exploring different business ventures. He presented shields, souvenirs and certificates to the entrepreneurs. He also thanked Mr.Mashadi for encouraging the budding entrepreneurs and presented him with a shield.

 

Fund raising concert for the House of Light School organized by M.A.J.U. students
Students of BBA and MBA arranged a musical concert on the August 7, 2009 for the House of Light School children, at Lok Virsa. This show was a part of Summer Business Project under the supervision of Ms. Sidra Paracha, Lecturer of this University.

The Battle of the Bands that performed at this charity show were from the universities of Islamabad. Two bands namely Kaffas and Viraag were from Iqra University, The Red Eye and Illuminati from Bahria University and Zeher from FAST University.
House of Light School is a free school founded in January 2006, primarily to educate the poor and eliminate poverty, by providing a standardized educational program starting from pre-school leading up to college. Currently the school is supporting 75 poor children of the area. They provide quality education, uniform, stationary, syllabus, books, and pick & drop service.

The management of The House of Light appreciated the enthusiasm of the students in organizing the show. The judges at the end announced the Kaffas Band as the winner of the Battle of the Bands.
 

M.A.J.U. hosts Youth Show on ‘The role of leadership in developing countries’
Mohammad Ali Jinnah University, Islamabad Campus in collaboration with Crescent Lions Club and News One held a Youth Show on ‘The role of leadership in developing countries’ on August 29, 2009.

Syed Asad Tirmazi Leader, Pakistan Youth Association, Mr. Jamil Asgar Bhatti Youth Activist and Senior Analyst, Mr. Zahid Mehmood Deputy Secretary All Pakistan Boys Scout, Ms. Shazia Javed President, Crescent Lions Club presented the introductory address and Ms.Maria Mashkoor, Lecturer/Patron Society of Human Resource Management (SHRM) Mohammad Ali Jinnah University, Islamabad  Campus.

This show was aired by News One TV on August 30, 2009 at 12:20 pm. The basic discussion focused on how leadership can be developed, the role of education and media, the need of patriotism and unity.

Syed Asad Tirmazi responded to a question on hereditary leadership, which is the norm in Asia. He said that it exists because no one is there to challenge it. The youth must enter politics and work for the progress and prosperity of Pakistan. To a question about improvements and implementation, Mr. Zahid Mehmood and Mr. Jamil Asghar Bhatti gave an example of the Holy Prophet (Peace.B.Upon.Him) who kept his calm in the face of adversities and led the people in the perfect manner.

Answering a question on the prevailing system in Pakistan, Ms. Maria pointed out that one person doesn’t make a system, we all do. She emphasized the need to stop the blame game and to concentrate on contributing positively. Everyone can become a leader when they start influencing others.
 
NAAT Competition at Mohammad Ali Jinnah University, Islamabad Campus
The holy month of Ramazan is the ninth month in the Islamic Calendar; it is the month in which the holy Quraan was revealed. It is a month of fasting and devotion to Allah. To celebrate this month, Crescendo in collaboration with JSPARK, JES & GENIX, organized a Naat competition on September 10, 2009, in the Iqbal Auditorium.

Qari Gulzar Madni, is the Muezzan at Faisal Masjid, and is also the pioneer of the Qirat Academy. Professor Kaleem Ullah Zia is the HoD at Internship College Rawalpindi and he is also doing his PhD in Islamic Law. Both were the judges at the occasion.

Crescendo Patron Mrs.Ameena Zafar, Assistant Professor and the HOD of Computer Sciences & Bio Informatics Department and the patron of JSPARK, Dr. Nayyar, HoD of Engineering Department Dr. Fazal Ur Rehman, the Patron of JES Dr. Mohammad Sagheer, collaborated to hold this competition. The Registrar Mr. Naqi Syed also attended the function.

The event started with the recitation of the Holy Quran. Ten students participated in the Naat Competition and presented their admiration to the Holy Prophet (PBUH). The best recitals were by Saqib Imran, Sabeena Rafique and Saima Malik. The judge gave the position holders shields for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes respectively.

The Crescendo Patron thanked the chief guest and judge for taking out some time from their busy schedules for this auspicious event. Shields were also presented to the chief guest and judges. The ceremony concluded with a prayer for the Muslim Ummah.

 

Internship in INFO SPAN
Students of Mohammad Ali Jinnah University worked as internees at Info span Pakistan a 350 seats call center. It is spread over 16,000 sq feet and basically serves U.S and European customers.
Students worked in different departments of the organization and were exposed to the practical aspects of a call center. It was a hands on training experience for them by professional managers who guided and taught them various aspects of the call center. Miss Sidra Paracha Lecturer supervised the students.

 

Project on Business plan for Events Management Company
Students of Mohammad Ali Jinnah University did a project “Business Plan for Event Management Company”. The aim is to target their audience via the electronic/print media, in order to ensure maxim media coverage. Miss Sidra Paracha Lecturer supervised this project.

This business plan was prepared for an event management company and covered all the facets e.g. company description, industry analysis, market analysis, competition, sales, operations, capitalizing structure, milestones and summary.
 

Calligraphy Exhibition of Quranic Verses
Mohammad Ali Jinnah University students of Introduction to Management (Section 1) arranged a calligraphy Exhibition of Quranic Verses which was held in the Workshop Room on September 10, 2009. There were 100 hand painted exhibits.

Hina Waheed and Irum Tasneem- both MBA students, used an oil paint technique for the background and Nakish style of calligraphy. Both the students were awarded sponsorships from Adamjee Insurance and Pelican Engineers.  

The Executive Vice President Dr. Mansoor Ahmed, faculty and staff viewed the exhibition and appreciated the efforts of the students. Miss.Maria Mashkoor Lecturer and Patron of SHRM supervised this project.
 

M.A.J.U. holds “ideas” project and poster exhibition in collaboration with IEEE

According to recent surveys and rankings, the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Sciences of Muhammad Ali Jinnah University is ranked as one of the best Engineering institutions in Islamabad. This is because of the competent faculty, research in emerging technologies, upgraded operational units and improved ways of teaching and learning.

OSRC’s Open Source Database PostgreSQL Training Program held at M.A.J.U. Islamabad Campus
Pakistan Software Export Board (PSEB) is the government agency authorized to promote Pakistan’s Information Technology (IT) Industry. The Open Source Resource Center (OSRC) is a project of the Ministry of IT, and aims to promote open source solutions throughout the country. Awareness-raising seminars, training workshops and computer network migrations will also be conducted.

On June 29-30, 2009, to promote open source solutions in the country OSRC (a project of Ministry of IT, executed by PSEB), launched a  first ever free of cost open source database “PostgreSQL” training program with collaboration of Enterprises DB and CS & BI Department of  Mohammad Ali Jinnah University, Islamabad Campus.

Dr.Abdul Qadir Dean FEAS, Dr.Nayyar Masoood Dar, Head of Department Computer Science and Dr.Hamid Rashid, Coordinator Bioinformatics Department attended the training program. Many IT managers, database application developers and Database Administrators (DBAs) also attended the training program.

 

Research Paper Presented
Mr. Inayatullah Khattak, Lecturer, Muhammad Ali Jinnah University, Islamabad Campus, presented a research paper on,“Dawning Reality and Shattering Idols of Unjustified Hatred: Analysis of the Role of Area Study Centre, Quaid-i-Azam University in clarifying US image among Pakistani students” in the “Area Studies: Challenges and Prospects” conference, organized by Peshawar University in collaboration with Han Siedal Foundation at Bara Gali Summer Campus of Peshawar University from July 18 to July 22, 2009.

 

M.A.J.U. signs MoU with Rawalpindi Chamber of Commerce and Industry
To create a link between academia and the industry, to promote research and development, the Rawalpindi Chamber of Commerce and Industry signed a Memorandum of Understanding recently with five universities

Mr.Ansir Ali Rajput, Head of Department Management Sciences signed the MoU on behalf of Mohammad Ali Jinnah University, Islamabad Campus at an impressive ceremony held at the Rawalpindi Chamber of Commerce and Industry, which was graced by former presidents, members of RCCI executive committee and faculty of the five universities.

President of RCCI Mr.Asad Mashhadi, speaking on the occasion pointed out the urgent need to bridge the gap between academia and industry prompted RCCI to take the initiative. He hoped that this step would be appreciated by all and boosts industrial growth. RCCI should identify industry needs so that precious resources are not wasted. The collaboration will not only improve the quality of education and set the trend for research based education, but will also bring about revolutionary changes in the country’s educational system. A viable relationship between industry and research organizations is imperative, as without research no development at any level can take place.    

The MoU will offer a unique experience to our students and will provide a practical experience to complement academic studies. The exposure to exceptional working environment will help to broaden opportunities for future employment for the students.
 

Panel discussion on ‘Tough Times call for Tough Brands’
Mohammad Ali Jinnah University, Islamabad Campus recently held a panel discussion on Tough Times call for Tough Brands. The guest speakers were Mr.Sarmad Ali Managing Director, Jang Group, Mr.Arshad Mahmood Qazi, Director PTCL, Mr.Sayyed Ahmad Masud, Managing Director, Channel 7 Communications (Pvt) ltd, Mr.Ali Kamal, Director Abt Associates, USAID Contractor and Mr.Khurram Idrees, Director Commercialization ST Ventures Ltd, NUST.

The one hour discussion aimed to review the impact of recession on advertising in Pakistan and abroad; changing times and trends and solutions if any. The discussion was interesting and lively with the panel answering questions put forth by the audience. 

MBA students under the supervision of Mr.Arif Vaseer Associate Professor organized the event. Mr.Ansir Ali Rajput Head of Department of Management Sciences graced the occasion with his presence and presented shields to the distinguished guests.

 

Gathering of the eLINK selected staff & candidates
Mohammad Ali Jinnah University, Islamabad Campus arranged a get together on Friday May 22, 2009 for staff/ students selected for the overseas visits under the eLINK project. The venue of this get together was the Workshop Room and the guest for this get together was EU diplomat Mr. Kauser Bhuiyan, Attaché, Economic Cooperation.

Seminar on Business Ethics
The purpose of arranging this seminar held on May 7, 2009 supervised by Mr.Arif Khattak  Lecturer, was for the students to get a better understanding of Ethical Behavior which will assist them in their careers. Miss. Tahira Khattak is a Human Resource manager at Mobilink, Islamabad. She presented a very practical example of ethical conduct. The first part of the lecture was on Ethical Behavior of a company with their customers because they are the most powerful stakeholders in any organizations.

The second part of the presentation was regarding the conduct of the employees within the organization and how employees are trained in the field of ethics and fair behavior. It also included the process of evaluation of ethical behavior in the company.

 

Seminar on MIS in Telecom
The seminar was held on March 30, 2009 on the topic MIS in Telecom. The guest speaker was Mr. Muhammad Altaf, Manager MIS, Ufone. Mr. Altaf used different examples to highlight the different aspects of MIS and its application in the telecom industry. It was a very informative seminar and the students got valuable information regarding Evolution of Data Warehouse (DWH), Business Intelligence (BI), BI Drivers, BI Challenges and its applications. The seminar ended with a question and answer session. Mr. Shakeel Raja Assistant Professor supervised the seminar and at the conclusion presented a shield to the guest and thanked him for attending the seminar.

 

Seminar on the Culture and the religion of the ancient cities of Uzbekistan
On Tuesday May 5, 2009, a seminar on Culture and the religion of the ancient cities of Uzbekistan was organized in the Iqbal Auditorium. The guests from the Republic of Uzbekistan were the Deputy Head of Mission Mr. Ismatullah Fayzullaev, Attache Mr. Mir Shahid Aslanov and the Second Secretary Mr. Saad Ullah Rasulov. Mr. Jawad Sahfi Lecturer, OPF College also attended the seminar as a guest speaker.

The guest speakers talked about the culture and religion of Uzbekistan and Iqbal’s influence on Central Asia. It was a very informative and interesting seminar for the students. Mrs Qurat ul Ain Jalil supervised the seminar.
The guests were introduced to the E.V.P Dr. M.Mansoor Ahmed, the Dean Management and Social Sciences Dr.Safdar Ali Butt, and H.O.D Social Sciences Dr.Aaisha Akbar.

 

Seminar on Financial Management Practices
Jinnah Finance Society has been actively conducting seminars to create awareness among the students regarding the practical aspects of finance. Recently, a seminar on “Financial Management Practices” was arranged.

The guest speaker was from the well known organization ‘Saif Holdings Limited,’ Mr. Hammad Mustafa Zaidi, Senior Finance Manager. He discussed the topics like the use of beta in assessing risk, application of time value of money, KIBOR etc. He further elaborated on the applications of these financial techniques in Saif Holdings Limited. The seminar ended with a question answer session.
 

Declamation contest organized by JCADS
A  Declamation Contest Spring 2009 was organized by Jinnah Cultural & Debating Society JCADS, on May 15, 2009 in the Iqbal Auditorium. Dr. Aisha Akbar HoD Social Sciences was the chief guest. Other distinguished guests included Mr.Ishfaq, Lecturer Mrs. Saeeda Ibrahim Lecturer, and Mr. Sajid Mehmood Assistant Registrar, of the University.

All the participants displayed their effective public speaking skills. Rabiya Bashir Ahmed Qureshi, Abdul Samad Amjad and Ch. Qaiser Rasheed won the first, second and third prize respectively.
 

Seminar on HR Application
The guest speaker was Mr. Rashid Malik, Manager Sales and Marketing (DWP Technologies) who shared his knowledge regarding HR Application. His knowledge and handling of the topic HR Application in their daily business was appreciated by the students. Mr.Arif Khattak Lecturer supervised the seminar held on May 7, 2009 in the Iqbal Auditorium.

 

Marketing Management – an event
This event was organized by the students of Marketing Management in the Boys Lounge under the supervision of the course instructor Ms. Sidra Paracha. The students did their utmost to make this event interesting for all. They displayed different products complete with histories, origin, market share, promotional tools, new and stylish versions and competitor’s information of different companies.

 

Visit to Aaj News
Students of MBA- 28 (Marketing) under the supervision of Ms. Sidra Shakoor Paracha Lecturer, visited Aaj News, located in Blue Area in Islamabad, on April 21, 2008.
Mr. Suleman, Sales Manager received and welcome the visiting delegation on behalf of Aaj News. The students were given a brief history of Aaj News, and also met with the Bureau Chief Mr. Khalid Jameel 

 Mr. Khalid Jameel appreciated the efforts of M.A.J.U. to give the students a practical view of the commercial world and he invited them to plan more visits to Aaj News. Souvenirs were presented by Ms. Sidra Shakoor Paracha to Mr. Khalid Jameel.

 

Visit to Murree Brewery & Tops
Students of BBA-22 under the supervision of Miss.Sidra Paracha Lecturer of Marketing, visited Murree Brewery & Tops Rawalpindi, on April 6, 2009.

Mr. Javed Iqbal (GM) and Syed Nazar Hussain Shah received and welcomed the visiting delegation on behalf of Murree Brewery. The students were given a brief demonstration on manufacturing and packing process by Mr. Adnan Shah.

Syed Nazar Hussain Shah appreciated the efforts of M.A.J.U to expose the students to the practical world.
 

Visit to NADRA
Fifteen students accompanied by their course instructor Mr. Shakeel-Ur-Rehman Raja,
Assistant Professor visited the offices of Nadra in Islamabad on May 8, 2009. Mr. Amjad Senior System Engineer of Nadra welcomed the students. 

Mr. Amjad briefed them about the organization and the practical dimensions of MIS, and the ways in which they do business. He also told them about the different departments in Nadra and its accomplishments. The students consider this visit as a mile stone in their practical learning.

 

Organizational Visit to Islamabad Traffic Police
Students of Management Information System under the supervision of Mr. Shakeel Raja, Assistant Professor visited the Head Office of Islamabad Traffic Police. The students were briefed by the Islamabad Traffic Police about the use of Information Technology being used by Islamabad Traffic Police and how the I.T section is working. S.S.P Sultan Azim Temuri also spoke about the benefits of Information Technology in Government Intuitions especially in the Traffic police and the future plans to bring more technology to I.T.P.

 

Seminar on Emotional Intelligence
BBA students arranged a seminar on Emotional Intelligence and Psychology. The guest speaker was Mr. Adan Adil Lecturer of Psychology, University of Sargodha who explained Emotional Intelligence, its relationship with Psychology and our daily life. He answered the student’s queries on the topic. The seminar ended with the supervisor of the seminar Mr. Imran Bukhari Lecturer, who thanked the chief guest and presented him with gift on behalf of the University.

 

NWFP UET STUDENTS’ INTER PROVINCIAL CULTURAL EXCHANGE VISIT
Under the Higher Education Commission (HEC) an Inter Provincial Cultural Exchange visit of NWFP UET Peshawar was arranged with Mohammad Ali Jinnah University, Islamabad Campus.

Fourteen students accompanied by two faculty members visited this University to share their provincial culture and thoughts. During the meeting held in the Workshop Room, patrons and coordinators of different societies interacted with the visiting students and gave a brief introduction of their society, its aims and objectives.

Dr.Aisha Akbar participates in National Conference on Education Policy 2009
The Head of Department of Social Sciences, Mohammad Ali Jinnah University, Islamabad Campus, Dr.Aisha Akbar participated in the National Conference held in Islamabad, May 2009 to review the proposed Education Policy 2009.

Educationists from all over the country attended the conference. After the inaugural session, the participants were divided into four groups. Dr. A.Akbar was assigned to Group 3 which reviewed the section related to higher and professional education.

 

French diplomats visit Mohammad Ali Jinnah University
Dr.Olivier Bergossi and Engr.Sandie Favier, a two member delegation from the French Embassy in Islamabad visited this University on May 21, 2009.

They toured the campus and were given a comprehensive presentation about the University and its industrial and academic collaborations and R&D projects. The scientific attaché gave a presentation about various French and E.U. collaborative programs. They also discussed the possibility of a scientific collaboration between Mohammad Ali Jinnah University and French organizations. Also discussed were French and E.U. scholarships.

The friendly ambiance created between the visiting diplomats and members of the faculty will go a long way in cementing ties.
 

JSpark holds a seminar on Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
A seminar Search Engine Optimization (SEO) was held in April, 2009  in the Workshop Room by JSpark (Jinnah Software Society). Mr. Nadeem Hussain from UK, team leader of a famous search engine Optimization Company  was invited as a guest presenter.

Mr Nadeem highlighted the importance of SEO for web marketing. He also presented various techniques for achieving SEO. A numbers of students from the department of computer science and Bio informatics attended the seminar and raised their questions regarding SEO. Students doing their final projects showed their keen interest in Search Engine Optimization.

With the successful hosting of the seminar, JSpark (Jinnah Software Society) kept its tradition in bridging the gap between the students of Mohammad Ali Jinnah University and the software industry. 

 

Visits organized by Society of Human Resource Management (SHRM)

National Bank of Pakistan, Islamabad
In March 2009, a visit was arranged by E-Business students to National Bank of Pakistan (NBP) Melody Branch.  The Vice President Mr. Shafiq A. Humayun, Chaudhry Ikram and Ms. Sara welcomed the students.
The main purpose of the visit was to emphasize the importance of electronic medium used in businesses these days and the increased development of technologies affecting the business operations and day to day activities. This visit highlighted the significance of use of digital technology in the banking sector and how NBP has incorporated it into their ongoing operations.
This visit under the supervision Ms. Maria Mashkoor provided some exposure about the practicality of IT in the real business world. It also helped the students who have to enter the business world in getting an insight about the essential requirements and basic knowledge of this particular discipline. 

Electromech Engineering Services
On March 20, 2009, the students of International Business Management, under the supervision of Ms. Maria Mashkoor; organized a visit to Electromech Engineering Services. Electromech Group is involved in trading of electrical items along with its production line mainly composed of Electrical Switchgears. The officers who met the students were Mr. Pervaiz Iqbal CEO, and Ms. Hina Pervaiz Finance Manager.

The purpose of this visit was to learn about their imports and exports and the procedures followed to carry out their international operations. They also learnt about the Letter of Credit procedure between the two parties in different countries and about the risks involved in carrying out the LC transaction.

Barclays Bank Islamabad
A visit was arranged by International Business students on March 21, 2009, to Barclays Bank, Jinnah Super Branch. Mr. Ali Mumtaz Customer Relationship Manager welcomed the students.

The purpose of this visit was to delve into the factors that despite extra cost entailed, as to why different organizations, including banks, choose to expand in the international market. The factors that help them select a particular country in which they can invest in, problems and issues that they come across when entering international boundaries, plus the threats they had from their competitors in Pakistan were also taken into consideration.
This activity also highlighted the operations of Barclays, both at international and national level.

Askari Bank, Rawalpindi.
E-Business students under the supervision of Ms. Maria Mashkoor visited Askari Bank Ltd at AWT Plaza, The Mall, Rawalpindi, on April 10, 2009. Mr. Abdul Qadeer greeted the students and conducted the visit.

The students learned about the practical dimensions of electronic business, its advantages, challenges and impact on the overall performance of the organization as well as on the employees.

Best Western Hotel, Islamabad
International Business students under the supervision Ms. Maria Mashkoor visited Best Western Hotel, Islamabad. Mr. Amir Baig, Manager, Sales and Marketing gave a guided tour of the hotel. The visit took place on April 11, 2009.

Best Western Hotel is the world’s largest hotel chain. It has almost 4ooo branches all over the world in 80 countries with its headquarter in Arizona USA. They do not compromise on quality and customer satisfaction and this is actually their success secret.
 

Jinnah Finance Society hosts a seminar
Recently, students studying the course Financial Management organized a seminar under the banner of Jinnah Finance Society (JFS). It was organized to enhance knowledge of financial management students. A very informative topic was selected which was “SME Banking in Pakistan – Past, Present and Future”.

The Chairman of SME Bank and SME Leasing, Mr. S.M.Naseem was invited to share his vast experience and knowledge with the students. The respected guest gave an excellent presentation. He discussed major issues facing SME Financing in Pakistan. An astonishing revelation by the respected speaker was that only 15% of the Pakistani population have accounts in local banks, that’s why many foreign banks are investing in Pakistan like Barclays, RBS etc. It was a very informative session for the students and added to their knowledge. The lecture was followed by a question answer session in which the guest responded to the queries of the students. In the end President of Jinnah Finance Society (JFS), Mr. Zafar Akhtar thanked the honorable guest for his valuable contribution to the knowledge of our students. Mr. Abbas Ismail, Patron, JFS who supervised the seminar, presented a shield to the respected guest.
 

Students conduct a survey on World Competitiveness
A group of International Business students participated in World Economic Forum-Survey data collection process. To compile this report, they gathered data for the World Economic Forum by surveying reports from 30 multinational enterprises. This was done under the supervision of the course instructor, Mr. Muhammad Ishfaq Khan. The students got a stipend of Rs.15000/-each and certificates from the World Economic Forum.

M.A.J.U. students act as coordinators
A group of eight students were coordinators at 16th HVACR EXPO / CONFERENCE – 2009 held at the Convention Centre, Islamabad on March 5, 2009. The students were paid a stipend of Rs. 7200/- and certificates were awarded by the Pakistan HVACR Society, Islamabad Chapter.

Participation in All Pakistan Inter-University Media competition, GIKI
A group of students participated in the All Pakistan Inter-University Media competition organized by Media Club, GIKI, NWFP. Students of the Islamabad Campus of Mohammad Ali Jinnah University participated in the short movie and on the spot commercial ad development under the supervision of Mr. M. Ishfaq Khan, faculty member, Department of Management Sciences.

Research Paper presented
Mr. Muhammad Ishfaq Khan, Lecturer Mohammad Ali Jinnah University, Islamabad Campus, presented his research paper, “The Litmus test for emergence of electronic wave in the academic sector of Pakistan “at the Electronic Learning and Distance Education Conference organized by V.U. of Pakistan in collaboration with A.I.O.U.  The research paper was presented at the HEC auditorium on 30-31 March, 2009.

Conference attended
Mr.Muhammad Ishfaq Khan attended the 24th Annual General Meeting and Conference held at the Marriott on "Economic sustainability & Growth for a globalized World". This was organized by the Pakistan Society of Development Economists at the Marriott, Islamabad, between March 31 – 2 April, 2009.

 
Research Paper Presented

On March 31, 2009, Mr. Arshad Hassan Assistant Professor Mohammad Ali Jinnah University, presented a paper, “Macroeconomic Factors and Equity Prices an Empirical Investigation by Using ARDL Approach.

The paper was presented in the 24 Annual General Meeting and Conference. Dr. Zafar Mueen Nasir, a visiting faculty member of M.A.J.U, supervised the paper. In the end Mr. Ansir Ali Rajput HOD-MS, congratulated Mr.Arshad Hassan on his success.

 

Career Pakistan visit M.A.J.U

A workshop was held in the first week of April 2009. Mr. Haider Qazilbash the Program Director and his Program Assistant Ms. Aisha Ommaya of Career Pakistan presented the developments and future plans regarding student benefits. Mr.Ansir Ali Rajput HOD MS supervised the event. The faculty of Management Sciences also attended the session.

The main concern of this workshop was the career development of students and how beneficial the mentors can be in their future professional development.

16th HVACR EXPO / CONFERENCE – 2009

The Students of Total Quality Management, Department of Management Sciences, of Mohammad Ali Jinnah University, Islamabad Campus visited 16th HVACR EXPO / CONFERENCE – 2009 held at Convention Centre, Islamabad on March 5, 2009.

There were about 20 exhibitors who show cased their products in The Expo like M/S. ARCO INTERNATIONAL, M/S CATKIN ENGINEERING SERVICES, M/S ELECTROMECH etc. The students asked different questions about the quality of products manufactured on the national and international scale.

The 16th HVACR EXPO / CONFERENCE - 2009 at Islamabad will certainly add value to every imaginable facet of development, technological innovation and increased productivity to enhance market share. It helps students to understand the production facility and quality maintaining practices in Pakistan. The students diversified in the expo and asked questions from different perspectives. The management of SABRO, an air conditioning company invited the students to arrange a study visit to the production plant.
 
Study Visit to First American Corporation, Sialkot

First American Corp. is a member of the Steering Committee, which consists of only a small number of manufacturers in Pakistan. The committee was created by ILO to eliminate the use of child labor in the manufacturing industry. First American Corporation (Pvt) Ltd. is the winner of the Habib Bank Trophy. MS students attend workshop on “How to write a Research Proposal”
On 21 March 2009, a self development workshop was organized by British Council at FAST University, H-11 Islamabad Campus. Mr. Simon Hall, Assistant Director, University of Warwick was the speaker. Master of Science (MS) Students of Mohammad Ali Jinnah University, Islamabad Campus nominated by the faculty attended the workshop.

Mr.Simon Hall gave a global perspective on concerns like increasing self-awareness and areas for self- development, making the most of work experience and how to write a research proposal. The participants witnessed a series of interactive skill development and capacity building practices. Students gained valuable insights and expert tips to develop their own writing, analysis and self appraisal skills. The workshop ended with a question answer session and students were given certificates by the host.
 
Industrial Visit to Zong Islamabad
The Society of Human Resource Management (SHRM) organized a visit for the students studying E-Business to Zong, Islamabad on February 13, 2009. The purpose of this visit was to understand the online operations of Zong and to be knowledgeable about the telecom industry in Pakistan. Mr. Adeel Hussain, Sales Analyst, Zong explained the entire procedure to them.
The students learnt that the world of business is moving towards time-efficiency and state-of-the-art information. Emerging technologies and globalization have increased the competition and enabled organizations to maintain their comprehensive information related to businesses.
The students of E-Business, in collaboration with SHRM and under the supervision of Ms. Maria Mashkoor; organized this visit.
 

Visit to Kenya High Commission Islamabad
On Friday February 20, 2009, the students of International Business Management, in collaboration with SHRM organized a visit to the Kenya High Commission, Islamabad. The visit was supervised by Ms.Maria Mashkoor.

The purpose of this visit was to understand the international operations of the Kenya Embassy and its ties with Pakistan. The students were welcomed by the High Commissioner Mrs. Mishi Masika, Mr. Wammbilianga First Secretary, and Mr. Chemisto Commercial Attaché.

The students learnt about the increasing level of interaction between the Kenyan and Pakistani business community and the business potential that exists between the two countries. The students also they learnt about the cultural similarities between the two countries along with the investment opportunities that exist in Kenya for Pakistanis.
 

Seminar on the Current Scenario of International Business
On Friday February 20, 2009, the students of International Business Management, in collaboration with SHRM and under the supervision of Ms. Maria Mashkoor; organized an interactive Seminar on the ‘Current Scenario of International Business’. The guest speaker was Mr. Jahenzab Taj, Director, Price and Segmentation, Telenor.

The students discussed the world scenario and its repercussion on all business activities and behavior due to the failure of the worlds’ big economies. The financial crisis and the problems leading to the global crisis and their possible solutions were discussed.
 
Visit to Nimrall Pharmaceuticals, Rawat
On Monday, February 23, 2009, the students of International Business Management, in collaboration with SHRM organized a visit to the Nimrall Pharmaceuticals - Nimrall Group of Companies, in Rawat. They market ethical, therapeutic, cosmocueticals, medical instruments, fine chemicals and allied products. The group was met by Mr. Irfan Ellahi, General Manager and the owner Mr. Kashif Syed. 
The purpose of this visit was to be study the international operations of Nimrall Pharmaceuticals, especially their exports and imports. They also learnt that the pharmaceutical industry is the fastest growing industry of Pakistan. Ms. Maria Mashkoor supervised the visit.
 

Visit to NAYAtel, Islamabad
On Monday, March 2, 2009, the students of International Business Management, in collaboration with SHRM and under the supervision of Ms. Maria Mashkoor organized a visit to the NAYAtel (Pvt) Ltd. Mr. Abdullah Saeed, Sales Executive and Mr. Umer Malik Associate Sales Executive, greeted the students.

The purpose of this visit was to get familiar with the online operations of NAYAtel. The students learnt that NTL's aim is to convert Islamabad into the most IT enabled and broadband rich and smart city not only in the country but in the whole South Asian region.

 

Seminar on Enterprise Resource Planning
On March 13, 2009, the students of International Business Management, in collaboration with SHRM and under the supervision of Ms. Maria Mashkoor organized an interactive Seminar on the ‘Current Scenario of International Business’.  The guest speaker was Mr. Farooq Azam SAP Technical Consultant, Siemens.

The purpose of the seminar was to hear about the working of the ERP system, and what benefits organizations are deriving by implementing this system. The students got an understanding of how the ERP system operates and how it attempts to integrate business processes across departments onto a single enterprise-wide information system.
 

Warid Telecommunication Limited, Islamabad, visited
On Saturday, March 7th, 2009, the students of International Business Management, in collaboration with SHRM and under the supervision of Ms. Maria Mashkoor, visited Warid Telecommunication Limited, Islamabad. The purpose of this visit was to know about the international operations of Warid. We were met by Mr. Ali Qureshi, and Mr. Gohar Kiyani.

The students learnt about the investments of Abu Dhabi Group in Pakistan, functions of Warid and the important role telecommunication is playing in the world.
 

Visit to Samaa News Channel, Islamabad
On Thursday, March 5, 2009, the students of International Business Management, in collaboration with SHRM organized a visit to Samaa News Channel, Islamabad.  Mr. Amir Jahangir, CEO, Ms. Hina Akhtar, Manager Public Relations, Mr. Sufian Ansari Accounts Executive, and Mr.Waqar Ihsan Admin Executive welcomed the students.

The basic purpose of the visit, under the supervision of Ms. Maria Mashkoor, was to get information about how media channels get the information about events happening in the world and across the borders, and what strategies they employ to be competitive and remain in the market. The students gathered valuable information about the news channel industry.

 

M.A.J.Us Sixth Convocation – over 400 graduates receive degrees
Mohammad Ali Jinnah University, Islamabad Campus, celebrated its Sixth Convocation on Thursday March 12, 2009, at the Convention Center, Islamabad. More than 400 graduates of different disciplines received their degrees. Mr.Qamar uz Zaman Kaira, Federal Minister for Kashmir Affairs was the chief guest. Dr.Ishfaq Ahmed, Federal Minister of State and Advisor to the Prime Minister for Science and Technology was the guest of honor. Mian Amer Mahmood, Chancellor of the University and Chairman Punjab Group of Colleges awarded the degrees to the students.

Industrial Visit to Pizza Hut
The students of MBA Sec 3, group named Rising Stars & Omaniaz under the supervision of Miss Sidra Paracha paid an industrial visit to Pizza Hut. The Regional General Manager Mr. Syed Hassan Ali Shah gave a brief introduction of Pizza Hut. He told us about the Sales & Promotion strategies of the Pizza Hut also the marketing mix & their market audiences.

Pizza Hut prices are easily affordable for all its customers. The promotion and marketing of its product is through the various TV channels and electronic medium like newspapers, radio where various deals and discount packages are advertised. He also told them about their competitors Dominos & Papa Sallis.  Discount packages were distributed amongst the students by the manager.

 

Talk Show by News One at M.A.J.U
‘News One’ organized another talk show with the collaboration of Mohammad Ali Jinnah University at the University Campus. Corruption was the topic of the show supervised by Mr. Arif Khattak Lecturer, Faculty of Management Sciences, at this University.

Dr. Safdar Ali Butt Dean Faculty of Management Sciences, M.A.J.U., Mr. Ammar Jafri Director FIA, SSP Islamabad, SP Rawalpindi Zone were the guests in this Talk Show. This topic generated a lot of interest. The panelists spoke eloquently and the student participation was lively

This collaboration between News One & M.A.J.U has created a healthy opportunity for the audience to enhance their knowledge by listening to very experienced panelists. The program was telecasted live on the News One channel which was viewed by thousands of people around the world. It was a highly interactive show.
 
The Value of Volunteerism
Crescendo arranged a seminar on ‘The Value of Volunteerism’ on February 11, 2009. Mr Akbar Mir, Manager Wafa Welfare Organization and Mr. Shahid Iqbal, Supervisor WWO were the guest speakers.

ITP Music Show and Painting Competition
The Islamabad Traffic police arranged a Music Show and Painting Competition on February 12, 2009, at the Shakarparian open Air Theater. M.A.J.U. students participated as volunteers in the event. It was arranged to give an opportunity to the handicapped to enjoy creative activities like painting and singing. There was a photo session of all the volunteers, organizers and participants with the senior officials of Islamabad Traffic Police. The event ended with refreshments for the whole team.

 
Naat Competition
The new semester began with a Naat Competition arranged by Crescendo on February 9, 2009. Eleven entries were received and nine participants were selected to participate.

The HoD Mr. Ansir Ali Rajput was the Chief Guest and Qari Gulzar Madni was the judge at this occasion. The former praised the efforts of Crescendo for arranging such religious activities besides the other co-curricular activities through out the year under the supervision of Mrs. Ameena Zafar.

The event started with the recitation of the Holy Quran. Afterwards all the participants of the Naat Competition presented their admiration to the Holy Prophet (PBUH). The judge announced three positions for the best recitals.  The first three winners were presented with shields. The Crescendo patron Mrs. Ameena Zafar thanked the chief guest and judge for taking out some time for this from their busy schedules. Shields were also presented to the chief guest and judge. The ceremony concluded with a prayer for the Muslim ummah. The guests then proceeded to tea.

Hiking Trip to Pir Sohawa
Jinnah Sports Society reshapes its activities and programs in Muhammad Ali Jinnah University. The new objectives of this society set by Mr. Arif Khattak (Sports Coordinator) is to organize different sports activities in the University and to involve the students and faculty members in those activities.

A live talk show was hosted by News One in collaboration with M.A.J.U. Islamabad Campus on the topic,”Ideology and Policy Making”.
Senator Talha, Mr.Saeed Elahi MPA, Air Marshal Masood ,Dr.Safdar Ali Butt, Dean Faculty of  Management Sciences, Dr.Tahir Khan Durrani, Head of Department of Finance and Economics, were the guests.

The collaboration between this University and News One created an opportunity for the audience to enhance their knowledge while listening to the discussion by very experienced panelists. It was an interactive show with students participating in the discussion.

Mr.Arif Khattak, Lecturer of this University organized this discussion and has indicated that more talk shows will follow.

Department of Finance and Economics
The Faculty of Management and Social Sciences of Mohammad Ali Jinnah University, Islamabad Campus, has created a new department, the Department of Finance and Economics.
Dr. Tahir Khan Durrani is the Head of Department. The following faculty members have been transferred to this department:-

Prof. Dr. Muhammad Mansoor Ahmed awarded Gold Medal
Dr. M. Mansoor Ahmed, Executive Vice President, Mohammad Ali Jinnah University, Islamabad was awarded a Gold Medal by the Pakistan Academy of Sciences for his outstanding contribution in the field of Engineering and Technology. Prof. Dr. Muhammad Mansoor Ahmed received his PhD degree in Microelectronics from the University of Cambridge, U.K. He has been associated with academia at various levels for the last 15 years, and currently he is a professor in the Department of Electronic Engineering at Mohammad Ali Jinnah University, Islamabad, where he is also holding the post of Executive Vice President of the University.

Dr. Ahmed is a chartered engineer from UK and he is a fellow of Institution of Engineer and Technology, UK. He was awarded the title of European Engineer (Eur. Ing.) in 2002 by European Federation. He is a senior member of the Institution of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, USA. He enjoys lifetime membership of IEEE Electron Devices and IEEE Microwave Theory and Technique societies, USA.

Dr. Ahmed has authored more than 70 research papers in the field of High Frequency Device Fabrication, Characterization and Modeling. He holds IEEE technical activities chair and has rendered services as an organizer, session chair and general chair of several IEEE International Conferences.
 
Seminar on Labor Laws in Pakistan
Recently Mr.Parvez Khan, an Advocate and MNA was the chief guest at a seminar organized by students studying Human Resource Management, on Labor Laws in Pakistan conducted at Mohammad Ali Jinnah University, Islamabad Campus. The seminar supervised by Mr.Arif Khattak began with a recitation of the Holy Quran by Usman Qureshi.

Mr.Parvez Khan shared his views with the students. He first told the gathering about the Labor Laws in Pakistan. Also he discussed the international labor laws in detail.He discussed the history of Labor laws.He discussed the reasons of failure of implementing the labor laws in Pakistan. Suggestions to properly implementations of labor laws were also discussed by the guest speaker.

 
Nexus Marketing Tourism Report
A one day educational and learning activity labeled”Marketing Tourism” was organized for the students studying, Fundaments of Marketing. It was a day trip to Khewra Salt Mines, the second largest salt mine in the world.
The students were doing an assignment and exploring the salt mines. Their assignment centered on the potential of Khewra Salt mines as a tourist attraction. Ms.Sidra Paracha Lecturer/Patron of Nexus organized and supervised this trip.
 
NEXUS celebrates seven years
Nexus, the Marketing Association of Mohammad Ali Jinnah University Islamabad Campus, aims to provide the students of the University with opportunities to establish themselves professionally.

Thursday December 4, 2008, was a busy day for Nexus. The society celebrated its Seventh Anniversary, cut a cake, sold different items made by the students, conducted a seminar and ended the day wit
h different activities which included singing, modeling, skits and dancing.
